  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A Basic Life Support course accredited by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross is required.
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention training must be completed within 30 days of hire.
  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate in English.
  • Must be able to walk and stand for extended periods, frequently carry up to 40 pounds, grasp, see and hear within the normal range with correction, restrain patients when necessary to protect them from harm, and turn and assist patients with activities of daily living.
  • Must be able to perform the listed physical activities, including bending, carrying, climbing, crawling, crouching, kneeling, stooping, coordinating eye, hand, and foot movements, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motions, standing, talking, and walking.
  • Must be able to work in clinical and hospital settings and may be exposed to body fluids and infectious diseases.
Responsibilities
  • Collect intake and output, weight, temperature, pulse, respirations, and blood pressure data; perform skin assessments; report abnormal values to the nurse; and apply age-specific considerations for children, adolescents, adults, and older adults.
  • Perform sterile procedures in accordance with nursing and infection control policies and procedures, including use of sterile gloves, dressing changes, and in-and-out catheterization.
  • Assist in facilitating the treatment milieu and participate in codes to protect patients from harming themselves or others.
  • Report changes in a patient's condition or behavior immediately to the nurse and seek assistance and guidance as needed to provide safe, high-quality, effective care.
  • Monitor patient sharps and valuables and label and handle them appropriately.
  • Conduct walking, exercise, and community groups.
  • Respond to patient requests for assistance respectfully, positively, and promptly, and ask patients or their families whether anything else is needed before leaving the room.
  • Perform basic hygiene care in accordance with nursing policies and procedures and report abnormal skin findings to the nurse.
  • Make frequent and ongoing patient rounds to provide comfort, positioning, toileting, and hygiene care, and communicate when the next visit will occur.
  • Document patient information accurately, in the appropriate place, and in a timely manner.
  • Transfer and transport patients safely in accordance with nursing policies and procedures, considering age-specific needs and ensuring that patients are appropriately covered and wearing slippers.
  • Welcome new patients and families, follow room-entry etiquette, introduce yourself, wear a name tag, and alert the nurse when concerns are not resolved.
  • Orient new staff and students to work areas and collaborate with nursing staff and hospital employees to support retention of qualified personnel.
  • Attend at least 80% of scheduled staff meetings and all mandatory educational sessions.
  • Use downtime to assist others or provide additional amenities to patients and their families.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of acute-care inpatient hospital experience.
  • Certified Nursing Aide certification with training from an accredited training program.
  • Training from an accredited Mental Health Technician program.
  • Completion of the first semester of nursing clinicals from an accredited program.
